A volcanic health-related session was held at the IUGG General Assembly in Perugia, Italy on Friday 13 July. The session, in association with the Cities on Volcanoes session, was very productive, with several presentations on health-related themes. Of particular relevance was Maria Luisa Carapezza's talk on volcanic gas emissions in the Alban Hills, Italy. Here, CO2 and H2S are being released in large quantities very close to residential areas. Maria Luisa has carried out detailed monitoring of gas fluxes in these areas. Claire Horwell also presented a talk on a new technique for determining the composition of micron-sized crystals. The SEM-Raman structural and chemical analyser is manufactured by Renishaw, UK.
